Today, Karina Lipsman, Congressional candidate for VA-08 warned that Putin’s main goal is to reunite the former Soviet Union, and that the international community has an obligation to not allow that to happen.
“Putin is creating the Soviet ReUnion, and he must not be allowed to succeed. For months, the intelligence community knew this invasion was being planned. Despite having the time and resources to deter Putin, this administration pursued appeasement and has now overseen two of the biggest US foreign policy disasters in under 12 months. The world is less safe because of the weakness that has been demonstrated by leaders.
One main realization of the Ukraine invasion is that NATO should have expanded to the East at a much faster pace. Imagine, for a moment, if NATO included Ukraine and her neighboring non-NATO countries. More countries would have been insulated against the brutal destruction that’s going on in Ukraine right now. While Russia has continued to take bites out of its neighbors, such as Ukraine and Georgia, it has never dared to touch an inch of NATO territory.
NATO is the epitome of peace through strength. As Russia continues with its atrocities, the administration must loudly proclaim NATO’s willingness to expand. Countries that border Russia but are still on the fence about joining the alliance, such as Finland and Sweden, should be encouraged and welcomed to join. Countries in Russia’s sphere of influence should be offered a pathway to join NATO. This is the only proven way to ensure that the Soviet ReUnion ends in failure.
I’ve spent over a decade in the defense industry proudly serving my country and have held the highest levels of national security clearances. I’m aware of the threats facing our nation and will be ready on day one to lead in Congress to ensure that our interests and security remains indivisible.”
